12 Privacy Checks Before You Connect Another App to AI

The “connect” button often appears at the exact moment you want a result. That is convenient—and a poor time to read carefully. A two-minute permissions review can prevent months of unnecessary access.

1–2. Identify the exact job and data

Write down what you expect the connection to do, then compare that job with the requested scope. A calendar helper rarely needs your entire mailbox history.

3–4. Separate read access from write access

Reading availability is different from creating events; viewing a cart is different from placing an order. Prefer read-only or draft permissions until execution is truly useful.

5–6. Check retention and model-training terms

Find out how long connected data is kept and whether it can be used to improve models. Business and consumer accounts may have different rules.

7–8. Protect sensitive categories

Health, financial, legal and workplace data deserve a higher threshold. Do not connect an account merely because the integration is available.

9–10. Review sharing and deletion controls

You should be able to see connected apps, revoke access and remove stored activity without hunting through several dashboards. Test the controls before depending on them.

11. Re-check after major updates

A new feature can change what a connection does. Treat major product updates as a reason to revisit permissions.

12. Schedule a quarterly cleanup

Unused integrations are quiet liabilities. Put a recurring reminder on the calendar and remove anything that no longer saves meaningful time.
